We love the ancient practice of yoga and want to share the discoveries about pilates equipment we have made. Items like a yoga block or band assist in the various poses or asana. This can be especially helpful for those who are not flexible or who lack in range of motion. Certain poses can be much easier with the assistance of props and some participants such as pregnant women must use yoga props for their safety and the safety of their baby.

Yoga is said to have originated in India, the physical poses and movement we know in the Western culture as yoga are merely one part of the practice of yoga. The word itself means union in Sanskrit; this references the union of the mind, body, and spirit. Balance of these three areas is the goal of yoga.

In yoga there are asana (poses), breathing exercises (Pranayama), and meditation (Dhyana.) The combination of all three methods yields a body that is more relaxed, more flexible and more in tune with itself.

There are several different kinds of yoga, each emphasizing a different aspect, but all achieving the goal of a connected mind, body, and spirit. Hatha yoga is the most common type of yoga and is slow and gentle; this makes it perfect for beginners. Vinyasa is a more vigorous form of yoga. Ashtanga emphasizes a constant flow of movement, while Iyengar is all about posture and alignment. Kundalini yoga has an intense focus on breathing and coordinating the breaths with the movement.

Yoga gear consists of a yoga mat and yoga clothes. Other props like a yoga ball or block are used in some poses and can be very helpful. Those doing yoga at home may find a yoga cd or yoga videos to be useful.  For those who travel to yoga classes and yoga bag will make it easy to tote gear.

Pilates is a form of exercise based on developing strength in the core of the body. The movements are controlled and graceful. Pilates will help a person develop better posture, less back pain, and long, lean muscles. Pilates can be performed on a Pilates mat or on a specialized machine.

Mat Pilates uses very little equipment, usually just a resistance band and a Pilates ball. There are some Pilates accessories that can be helpful including charts that show the correct exercise and describe its movements.
